Botox isn't a filler. it is a poison that is injected into the creases of woman's faces and freezes and hardens the muscle and tendons so the skin appears smoother until the body begins to absorb it and heal. Botox has not been mentioned to me by any doctors. It sounds strange.

Dr Oren Friedman from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Min. has experimented with injecting botox into the nasal dilator muscles of a few ENS patients. The rational being that the botox temporarily paralyses the nasal dilator muscles and this prevents the nostril from dilating thus limiting the airflow intake. He claims it has helped a little. Nothing dramatic, but has been somewhat beneficial. The advantage is that it is a very simple and short office procedure, and although it wares out after a few months, as Botox does, it can be repeated again and again. I do not know if there are no risks in repeating this too many times, or if there are any risks in over-dosing. I imagine that if done by a serious professional and allowed to clear between one phase and the other that the risks are very small, but I truly don't know enough about this. The disadvantage is lack of permanent solution and I don't think it has the potential of being half as beneficial as a well positioned implant.

Thanks TE , If anyknow it would be you.Did you ever see this Doctor at the Mayo. I hear it's pricy. I wonder if the Botox is pricy. I know the cymetra costs about $1000.00. I just wish there was something that would last. Are there any on the board that tried it. Would like to get there input I wonder by limiting the airflow it may retain the mositure My problem is that my lining is dry. Dr.Houser said my anatomy looks good However I feel my nostrils are to open as when it was swollen it was great I also could have sjogrens which is a double whammy and no cure for sjogrens when My nose was swollen with cymetra it helped, but only for 2-3 months it made life a lot better but it's worn off My turbinates don't swell like they used to and Dr.Houser said it's like rhinnitis sicca I wear silcone sheets which helps keep the mositure in and makes the nose feel full I have tried Nobleed, Sesame seel oil, etc, nothing helps It's just when the nose is swollen at the first inch of the nose I feel great Thanks TE about the Info on Botox Maybe I'll ask Dr.Houser about that as I am going for another cymetra Injection I guess I may need another 5 or 6 injections over time but that's really costly I just want a better Quality of life like we all do I think I probably need a couple more to bulk up the areas

TE, Did he said it created fullness and would help for dryness? So by injecting it , it paralizes the muscle causing less air and better breathing is that what you mean Thanks Again TE I figured you would know I hope you find something that works for you I wish you well

TE- 05-10-2008

No, the botox injections won't help create a sense of "fullness". yes, it does help a little with the dryness. The nasal dilator muscles are external - on the surface of the face. They extend from the cheek bones to the sides of the nose.

so how does it stop airflow then? it's good if it can create more moisture DO you know of any people on the board who have tried it I wonder if it's expensive So is this dr.Freidman at Mayo treating ENS, rhinnitis sicca patients? I need fullness or something to retain moisture But I think part of it is the Sjogrens I may have My body killing itself

On a side note, In looking for cures to my facial pain (the whole reason why i had procedures done in the first place), i found that That Botox is being used for Migraines, Facial Spasms, and Facial Neuralgias. Perhaps those ENS sufferers who also experience pain as a result of turbinate excisions might get pain relief from botox on top of this as well.

botox can help headaches
botox can relax muscles and it is also used for headaches, spasms - so it is a help for those in pain sometimes, that I know...

I have received the Botox injections from Dr. Oren Friedman at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. (I'm new to this site - he just told me about it) I just received my 4th (or possibly 5th) dose two weeks ago. My main problem is pain. I have found the Botox to be extremely helpful! The Botox is injected into my nasal dilator muscle on the side of my nose and into my cheek. It causes reduced airflow - opposite of a Breathe Right strip. I haven't received my most recent bill yet but the previous treatment cost $771. NONE of which was covered by my insurance. So, it is pricey and does not last more than 3-4 months (for me). I have found nothing else that even comes close to treating the pain. I believe I was the first or possible 2nd person Dr. Friedman tried this on. He is attempting to start a study regarding this.

Don't you sometimes feel with the Botox that your nose gets over obstructed?

bellatrac- 05-28-2008

I really have not had that feeling but I'm used to not being able to breathe much through my nose and anything is better than the pain. I also only get injected on one side.

TE- 05-28-2008

what would you say your main complaint was prior to the injection, which the Botox has improved? For instance, you mention pain. Anything else you were suffering from like - a feeling of lack of resistance which caused you shortness of breath? thanks.

bellatrac- 05-28-2008

My main symptom was severe facial pain which led to migraines. No, I haven't had any shortness of breath. I have dryness too but again nothing compared to the pain. The pain was so intense it changed my life.
