ENS or AR
Dr. Houser, I would like first to say "Thank You" for all the dedication you have put into this! I have been suffering for years with my sinuses. In between my suffering I had a skin graph done for allergies- found out I was allergic to dogs. I refused to give my dog up, opted for numerous of medication- then two sinuse surgeries. A deviated septum straighten in 2000 and somnoplasty in 2001. My allergy doctor had me taken 2 zyrtec a day, along with nasal sprays. I started having a severe dry eyes, nose and a smell. People on different occasion would walk into the room I was in and ask "What is that smell". I stopped taking all allergy meds because I felt so dry and thought the dryness was causing the smell. I was not aware of ENS and AR at the time my symptons began and just thought it was a reaction from my meds and my dog. My beloved dog (10 years old) just passed away 2 months ago, I thought my symptoms would go away. They are worse than ever now. I haven't taken any meds in quite sometime now; my nose is severely dry and the smell is back. I have a RX left over for levaquin, will this help the smell? Is the smell due to the dryness? I am afraid to take anything, I'm scared it will make me more dry. My last CT was done in 2007, at the time my symptoms were only minor, now 2008 they are severe. The findings were: "A 2.0 cm polypoid density, likely mucous retention cyst, is present in the inferior right maxillary antrum. Uncinectomy has been performed on the right and there also appears to have been resection of some of the right ethmoid air cells. On the left, there is a small opening between the nasal cavity and the medial wall of the left maxillary sinus which could be an accessory ostium or post-surgical change. Uncinectomy has been performed with widely patent infundibular region present. There is no mucosal thickening of the right maxillary sinus with only minimal mucosal thickening at the anterior medial wall of the left maxillary sinus. Minimal mucosal thickening noted int the ethmoid air cells. The frontal sinuses and sphenoid sinuses are clear. Prominent aeration noted of the middle turbinates mildly swollen with moderate swelling of the right inferior turbinate noted. Mild leftward septal deviation noted of the mid portion of the septum only." Dr. Houser what is your opinion on this? I am so depressed and now have severe anxiety due to the smell! Please Help! Thank you for any advice!! Patricia

By the sounds of it I would say sinusitis rather than AR or ENS. You need an exam with culture to identify the bacteria involved. Unclear if Levaquin would work or not - very possibly yes, but would start with a culture prior to antibiotics.
