Company Touts “Patients First” Bill De-emphasizing Funding For Basic Stem Cell Research
Tuesday, July 24, 2007 - Stem Cell Business News
Irvine, Calif.-based PrimeCell Therapeutics LLC on July 24 said it will take part in a series of events and discussions this week in Washington, D.C., whose purpose is to convince lawmakers to shift funding priorities away from basic stem cell research toward more practical clinical research using adult stem cells.
The company is supporting so-called “Patients First” legislation being introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Reps. Randy Forbes (R-Va.) and Daniel Lipinski (D-Ill.) that would give first priority in stem cell research funding to projects that show “greater potential for benefiting patients in the clinic,” rather to basic stem cell research.
On July 26, the company’s lead researcher, Francisco Silva, will appear at press briefings and meetings with patients and legislators.
Participants at the events will also explore the possibility of requiring the National Cord Blood Bank to bank additional types of stem cells that could have therapeutic potential.
PrimeCell says it has been successful in taking adult stem cells from the reproductive line, and reprogramming them to exhibit pluripotency, i.e., transformable into any cell or tissue type in the body.
The company says its PrimeCells have been transformed into beating murine heart cells, and into human heart, brain, bone and cartilage cells through therapeutic reprogramming.
