turb swell up post operation
Guys, sth I've not fully figured out...some of you say the turbs swell and obstruct you even past surgery Is that possible? Even if it swoll it wouldnt obstruct the breathing, would it? Or it's that by operating it swells but does not obstruct breathing??? What are the reasons then that turbinates swell???? (is there anything part from allergy, sinus or vasomotpr rhinitis?) Can anybody clarify?

You have 3 sets of turbinates. Even if the IT's are reduced, you have 2 more sets up there (if you did not have them touched) that swell with allergies, etc. I did not understand that at all when I had more and more procedures done on them. I thought the swelling would go away if I reduced the turbinates. No, I still had swelling from allergies, and on top of it, the IT reduction and damage caused my nose to get too dry so the mucus no longer drained, but got stuck = causing more congestion. It is very hard to understand because it seems paradoxical. It took me years...

You have 3 sets of turbinates. Even if the IT's are reduced, you have 2 more sets up there That's are very inaccurate statement. Every pair of turbinates are in a different chamber. The ITs are by far the largest and most of the flows through them and between them and the MTs. If the ITs are completely gone, even if the MTs congest it will never offer the same amount of congestion as the ITs, and it will feel different too because they are located elsewhere. That's about it, the ITs and the MTs. To say that there are "three sets" is misleading because the last "set" - the superior ones are the smaller than a button and are located so high up that I doubt if anyone can really feel when they swell. In any case they cannot really interfere with the breathing, perhaps with smell. To conclude: The ITs when congested interfere most with the actual breathing. The MTs have to be really really swollen to have any effect close to the IT's. MT congestion will cause mainly sinus pain and obstruction, not airway obstruction, and will reduce smell. and the superior turbinates are not even worth mentioning. If someone following IT reduction still feels congestion it can be from many different reasons: 1. what they feel is not actual physical congestion but paradoxical obstruction common in ENS but they simply cant tell the difference. 2. There are other anatomical abnormalities still existing like a deviated septum. 3. the turbinates are rarely shaved off the wall, so it's often that at some strategic narrow locations, close to the septum, some is left that keeps on swelling. This is the most popular reason as most have only partial IT reductions. 4. scar tissue on the turbinate stumps and elsewhere that cause a sensation of obstruction and swelling. 5. If the obstruction is only when lying down supine, there is a problem of rhinitis recumbency, which is caused because of varicose veins in the nasal mucosa and remaining turbinates.

Thanks for the info, TE. I figured it was just my other turbs swelling and the remaining ITs, plus weird airflow sensation.

the real acid test for ENS is when you get a bad upper trespitratory infection and your whole nose swells. In ENS the case is usually that when this happens although your nose feels congested you will notice that you can actually breath in much deeper and stronger through your nose as compared to normal. The added inflammation gives your nose back much needed resistance, albeit not exactly in the right places but still.... it works a little like a bad cotton test....

3. the turbinates are rarely shaved off the wall, so it's often ... Mine are ... first 2 cms on the left hand side... Saw it on camera. Looks like the head of the IT only starts about 2 or 2.5 cms higher up Guess this is why my "nasal valve" on that side simply doesn't function

hi mind if i jump in about my horrible turbs First did anyone on here have concha bullosa my doctor said i had that right before surgery was only going to cut IT's and i guess concha bullosa you have air pockets in the MT's so half of those were cut even though my looking at the pictures looks like more than half to me. anyway my IT's still swell upright and laying down i notice sometimes its when there is yellow stuff stuck up there around the IT area and if i use silver spray it diminishes it somewhat and or i also notice when it is humid or hot out my IT' swell also. so i was thinking if i go get allergy shots will this help with the swelling of the IT's but i am afraid because sometimes if i use allergy medicines they make my nose really dry unless i use a decongestant might help sometimes but i cant keep taking those.... so does anyone know if you get allergy shots does that make your nose really dry because unlike pills if i dont like something you can stop and a few days it is out of your system unlike allergy shots how long do they stay in your system? i dont want to ask an allergist because you know them they will just say yeah you will feel better just to get the insurance money and then i am left with yet another problem. sorry so long please anyone with any good or bad experiences with allergy shots please respond thank you :) opal....
